อาทิตย์ที่แล้ว เราได้รู้จักการใช้ who แทนคำนามที่เป็นประธานของกริยาในประโยคหลัก ในรูปอนุประโยคที่เรียกว่า Adjective Clause เสริมความให้ เช่น The man who wastes one hour of time has not discovered the value of life. ประโยคหลักคือ The man has not discovered the value of life. ประโยคนี้จำเป็นต้องมี Adjective Clause มาเสริมความจึงจะกระจ่างว่าเป็นคนประเภทใด คือ who wastes one hour of time

ต่างครั้งเราจำเป็นต้องเสริมความให้กับคำนามที่เป็นกรรมของกริยา เช่น He admires the kind man whom he met yesterday. ประโยคหลักคือ He admires the kind man ที่จำเป็นต้องมี Adjective Clause มาเสริมความของ Adjective Clause มาเสริม เพื่อให้รู้ว่าเป็นใตร จึงนำ whom he met yesterday มาเสริมความ และเพราะ the kind man เป็นกรรมของกริยา admires จึงต้องใช้ whom แทน the kind man

นอกจากจะใช้ whom แทนคำนามที่เป็นกรรม whom ยังเป็นกรรมของคำบุพบท เช่น to whom, for whom ดังตัวอย่างว่า

At the party he met many people, one of whom was his former teacher.

She bought a lot of presents for whom I don’t know.
