ภาษาอังกฤษ ในแต่ละระดับสังคม มีใช้ต่างกัน จำแนกเป็น ภาษาสุภาพ (Formal English) ที่ใช้ในจดหมายสมัครงาน จดหมายราชการเป็นต้น และภาษาพื้นบ้าน (Informal English) ในประเทศอังกฤษ จะเห็นได้ชัดระหว่างภาษาอังกฤษที่ใช้ในพระราชวัง และภาษาอังกฤษที่ใช้ในตลาด ในอเมริกา แม้ไม่มีระบบกษัตริย์ แต่ก็มีสังคมหลายระดับที่มีฐานะและระดับการศึกษากำหนด จึงมีภาษาต่างกัน ระหว่าง นักวิชาการ และ คนทั่วไป รวมทั้งกรรมกร
