กริยา หรือ Verbs เป็นคำสำคัญที่สร้างและบอกเหตุการณ์ต่างๆ ซึ่งมีทั้งกริยาหลัก (Main Verbs) และกริยาช่วย (Auxiliary Verbs) ที่จำแนกไปเป็น Modal Auxiliary Verbs หรือเรียกสั้นว่า Modals ที่ใช้ร่วมและเสริมความให้กริยาหลัก ซึ่งเป็นเรื่องในอาทิตย์นี้

Modal Auxiliary Verbs และความหมายเสริมกริยาหลัก มีดังนี้

· can. ใช้แสดงความสามารถ (ไม่ใช้ร่วมกับ to be able to) เช่น He can work long hours.

· may. ใช้แสดงความเป็นไปได้ แต่ไม่แน่ชัด เช่น She may or may not move to Hawaii.

ใช้ขออนุญาติ เช่น May I help you? May I leave early today? ไม่ใช้ can

· might. ใช้แสดงความเป็นไปได้ แต่ไม่แน่ชัด เช่น The sky is very dark. It might rain tonight.

· could. ใช้แสดงความเป็นไปได้ แต่ไม่แน่ชัด เช่น He drives a Ferrari. He could be rich.

· should. ใช้แสดงความเป็นไปได้ที่ไม่แน่ชัด เช่น He should arrive soon. หรือ สมควร เช่น You should have respect for your parents.

· would. ใช้ขอความช่วยเหลือในประโยคคำถาม เช่น Would you give me a ride home? มีอีกสำนวน ที่ใช้เหมือนกันคือ would you mind ที่ต้องตามด้วย gerund กริยาที่มี –ing ลงท้าย เช่น Would you mind turning off the light?

· will. ใช้แสดงเจตจำนงค์ที่แน่ชัด เช่น He will certainly come to the party tomorrow.หรือใช้ · แสดงกาลอนาคต เช่น We will leave for the airport at 5 AM tomorrow.

· must. ใช้แสดงความเป็นไปได้ที่ไม่แน่ชัด เช่น He must be about 70 years old. หรือ ความจำเป็นที่ ต้องกระทำ เช่น People must obey the law.
