I love living in America, but it also has a downside, which is that the US does have serious natural disasters. Each area and state has its own natural disaster. In the Midwest, there are snow storms and the winter is super cold in places like Minnesota and Illinois. Alaska’s winter is unbearable. We have earthquakes on the West Coast (e.g. California, Oregon, Washington). In the lower Midwest (e.g. Oklahoma, Kansas), there are tornadoes. In many states, such as Idaho and Montana, they have destructive wildfires. In the southern states (e.g. Florida and Texas), people have to deal with hurricanes. The deserts are scorching hot in the summer months in the states of Nevada and Arizona. In Hawaii, they have tsunamis and volcano eruptions. For Thai people in the US who may live far away from Thai communities, with no Thai temple, no friends or families, they can be very lonely and become depressed during the bitter winters.

Because I work in America as an interpreter I get to touch the lives of people at all levels of society, but especially those who are in difficult situations. However, I believe that most Thai people that live overseas are not indigent or living miserable lives, in part, because Thai people often help each other. There always seems to be someone with the generosity to help out. Thai temples in America could offer temporary shelter in disasters. In the event that Thai people find themselves in distressful situations like being in jail or in a fatal accident, the local Thai consulate, Thai groups or Thai organizations could extend help. But, you don’t have to experience natural disasters to have a disastrous life. Some people become poor and have a difficult life because of their own actions like those who overwork themselves for the love of money, those who have gambling addictions and those who are addicted to other vices. These people will have problems no matter where they live.

I have much sympathy for the Americans affected by catastrophic Hurricane Harvey. The least I can do is to send my moral support and a small monetary donation that I gave through the American Red Cross.
