อย่าแปลตามตัว ให้แปลไอเดีย Don't translate word-for-word; translate idea.

ไม่นานมานี้ ได้ไปเป็นล่ามแบบฉับพลันให้นักพูดสร้างแรงบันดาลใจท่านหนึ่งจากประเทศไทย ล่ามต้องแปลจากไทยเป็นอังกฤษให้ ฝรั่งฟังแบบทันที เขาใช้สำนวนเยอะมาก บางทีก็มีกลอนแถมมาด้วย

เช่น กิ่งทองใบหยก - หมูไป ไก่มา - ร้อยวัน พันปี

คนไทยหลายคนได้เดินมาถามล่ามว่า "พี่ๆ เขาใช้สำนวนเยอะมาก พี่แปลยังไงคะ" เลยตอบเขาว่า "เวลาแบบแบบนี้ จะไม่แปลตามตัวค่ะ ต้องแบบไอเดียหรือแบบจับใจความ"

สำหรับการแปลเป็นล่ามและการแปลเอกสาร ถ้าอยากจะแปลให้ได้อรรถรสตามต้นฉบับ ต้องพยายามหาสำนวนที่ใกล้เคียงที่สุดมาแปลเท่าที่จะเป็นไปได้ บางทีก็มีที่เขาแปลกันไว้แล้ว เช่น หนีเสือปะจระเข้ Out of the frying pan into the fire. บางอันก็ยังไม่มีที่แปลไว้ ล่ามต้องคิดไวมาก ถ้าไม่ฝึกหรือไม่รู้มาก่อน การแปลก็จะไม่ได้รสชาติเท่าที่ ควร ผู้แปลเอกสารจะได้เปรียบเพราะจะมีเวลาค้นหาคำแปล แต่ล่ามไม่มี

การแปลในลักษณะนี้ จะแปลตามตัวไม่ได้เลย ยิ่งถ้าใช้กูเกิลช่วยแปลแล้ว ยิ่งจะทำให้คนฟังหรือคนอ่านงงเป็นไก่ตาแตก (Like a chicken with its head cut off ไม่ใช่ Confused like a chicken with shattered eyes นะคะ.)

ฉันชอบดูกูเกิลแปล ฮาดี วันไหนอยากขำ ก็จะหาอะไรไปให้กูเกิลแปลให้ดู

ข้างล่างนี้เป็นตัวอย่าง ที่กูเกิลแปล และอีกอันเป็นการแปลแบบตามตัวค่ะ

Literal Translation แปลตามตัว: Look at the moves of the knight (horse) and the rook (ship).

Literal Translation แปลตามตัว: Catch fish with two hands.


หมูไป ไก่มา to reciprocate, to help each other out

Google Translate: pig to chicken

Literal Translation แปลตามตัว: Pig goes, chicken comes.

Literal Translation แปลตามตัว: a gold branch and a jade leaf


ฉันได้รวบรวมและแปลสุภาษิต สำนวน โวหารไทยไว้ให้ตัวเองหลายร้อยสำนวนและเอาไว้สอนต่างชาติด้วย บางอันก็มีที่เขาแปลไว้แล้ว บางอันก็ไม่มี เลยต้องแปลเก็บไว้เอง บทความนี้เอาบางส่วนมาฝากผู้อ่านค่ะ
